Research Interests

My research interests are interdisciplinary, spanning the fields of Volcanology, Seismology and Tectonophysics and aiming to understand deformation processes mainly in volcanic, but also in non volcanic areas. My research integrates field data from seismic, ground deformation and chemistry monitoring with laboratory rock deformation experiments in order to better understand the deformation processes leading to earthquake and volcanic eruptions occurrences. I extensively worked on physical and mechanical properties of rocks with relation to studies of seismic tomographies, seismotectonics, dynamic fracturing and pre-eruptive seismic signals in volcanic areas.

  • Thermo-mechanical weakening of volcano edifices
  • Time dependent brittle deformation
  • Seismic signals during fluid flow and magma emplacement
  • Dynamic fracturing, imaging and seismic signals
  • Laboratory simulations of triggering mechanisms for earthquakes and crack propagation
  • Seismic tomography of the inner structure of volcanoes from micro to macro scale
  • Imaging of deformation and failure from acoustic emissions and seismic microtomography
  • Deformation mechanisms and permeability of fault damage zone
  • Physical properties of borehole cores and upscaling to geophysical logs
  • Deformation mechanisms in rocks and gas emission (thoron and radon).
  • Deformation mechanisms of highly porous grainstones and tuffs
