Conference overview
MDSG’s Annual Winter Meetings have a mix of presentations from academics, industry and postgraduate and Masters students. The meeting showcases current research in the field of mineral deposits. In addition to the obvious developments that such research has on our understanding of mineralised systems, mineral deposit studies over the last 50 years have acted as a catalyst for blue-skies research into wider aspects of Earth processes, and vice versa.
Planned sessions
1. Strategic metal supply to the UK
The increasingly vulnerable supply of metals such as REE, PGE, In, Te and Li to the economy of the UK has been the subject of recent government policy, driven by the efforts of the MDSG. The session will include an open panel discussion, chaired by Gus Gunn (British Geological Survey).
2. Crustal to micro-scale controls on gold deposits
Gold remains one of the most sought after commodities on the planet, and the range of deposit styles found across the globe drive research and exploration towards new genetic models and exploration and processing strategies. This session covers the controls on gold deposits, from a crustal scale down to the finer mineralogical characterisation at a micro-scale. KEYNOTE: Richard Goldfarb (USGS).
3. New developments/discoveries in exploration
Sponsored by Antofagasta plc., this session aims to highlight new developments in the strategies for, implementation of, research into, and teaching of, mineral exploration. It will also cover updated or new information on newly discovered deposits from around the world. KEYNOTE: Dick Sillitoe (SEG International Exchange Lecturer)
4. Applied mineralogy
Sponsored by the Applied Mineralogy Group of the Mineralogical Society, this session will focus on how our understanding of fine scale mineralogical characteristics aid in the development of models for ore genesis, and industrial applications in mineral processing. KEYNOTE: Jan Cilliers (Imperial College)
5. Developments in porphyry-epithermal systems
This session will include current research into this major ore deposit class. KEYNOTE: Jeremy Richards (University of Alberta) - sponsored by NERC.
6. Nature and genesis of Ni-Cu-PGE deposits
This session will include current research into this major ore deposit class. KEYNOTE: Tony Naldrett (University of the Witwatersrand).
7. Ore deposit research in progress
We welcome presentations on all aspects of mineral deposit research, including projects in progress. In this respect, PhD and Masters students are particularly encouraged to present results of their research projects.
Programme
Wednesday 2nd January - Evening Icebreaker
Thursday 3rd January - Scientific Sessions, Conference Dinner
Friday 4th January - Scientific Sessions
Conference Organisation
Scientific sessions will include keynote lectures, talks, posters and panel sessions. There will be no parallel sessions in order that all delegates can participate in all sessions where lively debate will be encouraged. Following suggestions at recent meetings, time will be allocated after each session for students to get feedback and further questions on their oral presentation
Our aim is to attract up to 250 delegates to the meeting including academics and students, and industry representation is a key feature of all MDSG meetings. We expect a significant number of attendees from outside of the UK.
Travel Directions
Leicester is centrally located in the UK and easily reached by train, bus, road and air. The conference will be held at the Department of Geology in the main campus. Maps and Directions.
