Year Abroad

The Department of Geography offers a four year degree programme with a year abroad, available to students taking BA Geography, BA Human Geography, BSc Geography and BSc Physical Geography.

Partner Universities

At present, we have agreements with the following institutions:

These institutions have been chosen because they have Geography departments with similar teaching and research interests and also because there are links with staff at Leicester.

How to Apply

Students do not apply for this programme through UCAS; instead all single subject applicants have the choice of transferring to this programme at the end of their second year.

Entry Requirements

Places are limited and to be considered you will need to have a strong academic record and be in good standing with the University.

Degree Structure

In the normal three year degree the second year accounts for 40% of a student’s final mark and the third year 60%. In the year abroad programme 20% is based on second year, 30% on the year abroad and 50% on the final year back in Leicester. There is no set programme of study as individual choices are determined by student interest and course availability. On successful completion of these four years of study you will be awarded with a degree that recognises your time spent studying abroad eg. BA Geography with a Year Abroad or a Year Abroad in Europe.

Fees

Students pay their fees at Leicester and are responsible for their own travel and living costs in North America. For European destinations fees are covered by the Erasmus programme.

How do our year abroad students rate Leicester?

As a JYA student from the United States studying abroad at Leicester, I found my year away from home an excellent test to see how independent I could be as a young adult and student. University life differs greatly from the US to that of the UK, as not only do you live farther away from campus (causing you to rely on yourself more to function efficiently day to day) but your studies are more apt to measure your personal ambition to learn. Studying is more independent as Professors expect you to study the course material and research on your own, rather than have weekly or daily assignments as courses in the US. If you're thinking about studying abroad, think about taking a Geography course at the University of Leicester, especially if you want an academic challenge.
