Geography and the Everyday Politics of Identity
Year Three, Semester One
Course Code: GY3153
This module will explain, in both theoretical and empirical terms, the relationship between place and identity. It will identify and explain how geographers have contributed to understandings of identity. It will critically examine the complex and contested ways in which identities are represented, performed and experienced. In 2012/13 the module will primarily (but not exclusively) examine age-related identities and how identity changes across the lifecourse, and the geographies of different sexual identities. The module will provide a safe and supportive environment in which students can reflect critically on their own identities and the ways in which these are spatialised.
Assessment will be by 40% field report (autoethnographic diary) and 60% essay (choice of titles or own title).
