Core Concepts in Human Geography
Year One, Semester One
Course Code: GY1011
This module introduces students to a range of geographical issues surrounding difference and inequality. Students are encouraged to think about the ways in which social differences (e.g. around class, age, sexuality and dis/ability) are expressed and contested in different places. We look specifically at issues around identity, exclusion and the representation of different social groups. The second part of the module explores how these kinds of differences are experienced and contested in urban places. We focus on issues around public space, architecture/power, regeneration, gentrification and world cities. Students are encouraged to begin thinking critically about how urban spatial processes affect and effect the everyday lives of different groups of people in different ways.
