Geography Society

Welcome from the GeogSoc President

Matt Young

Hi, my name is Matt and I am just about to enter into my last year studying BA Geography (scary stuff!). I was thrilled to be elected as the President of the Geography Society for 2011/12 and this coming year is going to be one of the best yet!

I'm not the typical Leicester student; I transferred from a different university a couple of years ago, and had to defer the year last year, however my experiences at the University of Leicester have been some of the best of my life. This is in part to the lecturers and the course; however a lot is down to the people who I have bonded with this year.

Geogsoc plays such an important part of the development of geography at Leicester; the way in which Geogsoc allows the new fresh faces, and the university hardened third years to come together is something I want to be part of - to lead an institution that could shape someone’s whole university experience.

The Geography Society is entirely student run, with full support from the department. The Geog Soc committee has some fantastic events lined up for this year, kicking off with the massive geography bar crawl in October – not to be missed! An amazing way to meet people on your course, and of course get a little tipsy! Later in the year there are informal socials, the Christmas Party, a trip to Alton Towers and the infamous end of year Ball. And with our sponsorship from Vodka Revolution, we all get a great discount on food and drink and one of Leicester’s best bars!

In addition to these fantastic social events, there are many other ways of getting involved with the Geog Soc. Join the geography football or netball team or even volunteer with the environment team...there are some great opportunities with some great people!

Come and see us at the Fresher’s Fair or in the Geography Department. The Geography Society will provide you with some of the best times of your life!
