Career Opportunities
“Job security is on everybody’s mind these days. It is very important that students leave University with the best possible chances to secure the job they want. We do what we can to help them along the way.”
Dr Sue Page, Head of Geography
Geography graduates are highly sought after by employers (see The Independent article). Geography graduates stand a very good chance of obtaining a graduate job, currently rated at 70%.
The Department is ready to support your career development in the following ways:

Also they will acquire a wide range of transferable skills such as time management, project management, group work, oral and poster presentations, report writing and communication skills. You will have unrivalled spatial awareness. We will provide you with a skills transcript at the end of each year .
Careers Tutor
We have a dedicated careers tutor in the department. During term time you will receive weekly email digests containing information about career fairs, jobs, career development courses and other practical information. We also have a careers notice board.
Modules to maximise employability
We have a new second year, ten-credit module on Workplace Geographies. The module aims to maximise your employability, opportunities for work experience, to develop your understanding of the job market, to support the generation of high-class CVs and covering letters and to build personal confidence through a process of reflection, identification of skill gaps and action to address those gaps. The module will be co-taught by career development professionals, past graduates, academics and representatives from a wide range of employers.
The department offers a second year, ten-credit module called Geography in Education. If you take this module you will work with a local provider of secondary education and working closely with the teacher you will develop skills and experience that will be beneficial to a career in teaching.
Careers Services
The University has a dedicated careers service that is there for your use. You can have one-to-one meetings to discuss your career plan, have your CV and application form checked and take assessment tests.
Careers Events
The careers service also organises a number of events and workshops that will facilitate meetings between undergraduates and employers and develop awareness of particular job sectors. These are free to attend.
The University takes part in at least two careers fairs per year. These are large events which attract a significant number of employers.
Leicester Graduate Internship Programme
Interns work on specific projects for 6-months and engage in training and development through a bespoke career development programme. Key factors in the success of the internship programme have been a wide range of departments offering different internship experiences and the support given to the interns.
