Social and Cultural Geographies

Year Two, Semester One

Course Code: GY2152

This module provides a thorough overview of key approaches to the study of social and cultural geography.  It charts the emergence of the 'cultural turn' in human geography since the 1980s and critically assesses the various theoretical approaches to the study of social and cultural phenomena that have been adopted by human geographers in the intervening decades.  The module analyses how social and cultural spaces are experienced, felt, represented and materialised.  It will draw on case studies of social and cultural phenomena from diverse contexts (e.g. urban and rural spaces; the Global South and the Global North) and at various scales (eg the body, local, national and global).

Assessment will be by:

  • Written report (choice of two essay titles and a policy report (50%)
  • Examination (50%)
