Research Interests
I am a geographer, with an initial career focus (NERC InterMet) on the use of spatial analysis techniques in environmental modelling within an agricultural and climatic domain. This research base led to an interest in e-computing, both from the perspective of managing and integrating data from multi-sensor networks and the need to tap into significant processing power to run complex process models for wider landscape-scale perspectives on pest and disease invasion. This focus also led to my involvement in the ESRC small grant project entitled ‘grid-enabling geographically weighted regression’ with Professor Brunsdon, led by Dr Harris of the University of Bristol and in partnership with the Centre for e-Science at the University of Lancaster.
The need to communicate the results and benefits of a geographical approach to often locally perceived or modelled issues has resulted in an on-going interest in visualisation and participatory engagement with modelled outputs using a variety of visualisation methods. Funding as part for the Spatial Literacy In Teaching & learning (SPLINT) CETL, for which I am the lead Co-PI and Site Manager for Leicester, has enabled a more recent and developing stream of research looking at mobile, virtual and augmented reality visualisation methods for communicating and developing spatial understandings. Working within the broader context of spatial literacy, these interests are both pedagogic and research related.
In 2009/10 I was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship for supporting and developing excellence and innovative approaches to teaching and learning in Geography.
