Background
Rhona Borts grew up in a small suburb of Boston, Massachussetts. She did her first degree in Biology (Genetics) in Providence Rhode Island. Because she couldn’t learn to scuba dive (it was much harder in 1972!) she gave up her dream of being a Marine Biologist. Fortunately, she fell in love with Genetics immediately and hasn’t looked back. Rhona studied the biochemistry of α-glucosidases during Dyctiostelium discoideum development for her PhD. As a post-doc she returned to Boston where she was finally able to engage in research into mechanisms of recombination which she has been doing ever since. In 1991 she was persuaded to come to Oxford as a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow and in 2000 moved to Leicester.
