Your Society

SPELL is the social and academic society for postgraduates in the School of English. Throughout the academic year we coordinate formal and informal events to bring postgraduates together and support your research.

The SPELL Committee is focused on reaching out to all postgraduates in the School of English and hope to craft a number of events that everyone can enjoy. Please get in touch with any member of the committee if you have any suggestions/ ideas for future events.

Some of our recent events have included an annual welcome reception, the Postgraduate Forum, two theatre trips, a cinema evening and an ongoing poetry night. We look forward to meeting you at your induction.

Postgraduate Forum is a warm and collegial environment where postgraduates in the school of English can present on any topic to a group of their peers. We invite papers of fifteen to twenty minutes on any aspect of your research, or if you are an MA student and would prefer a shorter format, presentations of five to ten minutes are welcome.

Occasionally the Postgraduate Forum includes faculty round tables or career development round tables, and refreshments are always served and plentiful! Our last Postgraduate Forum included papers on contemporary literature, Chaucer and Wordsworth.Event announcements are sent out via e-mail, posters in the Attenborough tower and postgraduate room, as well as on the ‘Postgraduate Activities’ area of Blackboard. This is a great way to meet lots of people with similar experiences.

See the "Forthcoming Events" and "Calls for Papers" pages for details of upcoming Forums.

Feel free to use the tea/coffee facilities in the postgraduate room in the Attenborough tower (1617), just leave 30p in the pot per drink to help us keep it running.
