REF Results

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), published in December 2014, over 70% of the School of English’s research outputs were classed as either ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’, with 33% of them ranked in the highest category (4*) as ‘world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour’. 100% of our ‘Research Environment’ and 90% of our ‘Research Impact’, the latter referring to the reach and significance of our research beyond academia, were ranked in the two highest categories (4* and 3*). On the basis of these criteria, including the fact that all of our staff are research active and 98% were submitted to the REF, the Times Higher Education rankings* placed us 12= out of 89 UK departments.
