PhD research
My research examines the various connections between Andrew Marvell and privacy: his attitude towards print; private lives; and privacy as a theme within his writing. My thesis identifies an ideology of privacy in the seventeenth century and posits Marvell as an important witness to this important development of his age. Investigating this under-explored social context of privacy and Marvell’s interaction with it, I suggest that he represents a sui generis model of private authorship: someone who writes only for himself.
