Overview
The MA in English Language and Linguistics combines an intensive introduction to linguistic methodologies and research skills with detailed study of selected
areas and issues in the field. Students can expect to develop a broad knowledge of diachronic and synchronic linguistics, a command of methodologies for understanding and analysing language, and the skills of independent scholarly enquiry, information retrieval and presentation. The course is suited to students preparing for MPhil and PhD work and it also teaches a range of transferable skills invaluable to students wishing to pursue careers in other areas.

Expertise within the School
The School consists at present of thirty full-time members of staff with publications and research interests in all the major periods and fields of interest in the subject.
Some of the Options are offered within the School's other MA programmes and students with interests that span literature and linguistics will particularly welcome working alongside students with a more literary focus.
Resources
The David Wilson Library is an extremely well-stocked resource for all levels of study in English. In addition to the bookshelf collection, the Library subscribes to an excellent range of electronic resources and has areas for private and group study, as well as a dedicated Postgraduate Room.
Material housed in the Library's Special Collections includes the Robjohns Collection of medieval manuscripts and early printed bibles, the Fairclough Collection of material relating to 17th-century history and the papers of the Leicester-born playwright Joe Orton.
