Postgraduate Research

We have PhD positions available in the following research areas:

How can we help?

A PhD in the UK is a research-based degree. The first step is to identify an area of research and a potential supervisor. The next step is to contact the potential supervisor directly and discuss your research plans. Please contact the Head of Research Group if you are not sure who might be your potential supervisor. Then you need to apply formally (and this can be done on-line). Then, if accepted, you need to find the money for fees and maintenance. Then just come and join us!  We can only reply formally to people who submit a formal PhD application. There is no application fee.

Research groups are flexible about PhD topics so please do not feel that because there is no precise match between topics that Research Groups are advertising and your specific interests that we are not interested in your application. Please get in touch with the Research Group Head!

Requirements

The entry requirements for applying for our PhD programmes are:

  1. A minimum of 2:1 (Honours) degree or equivalent.
  2. An English Language qualification is required (if English is not your first language). Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately prior to the start of their course, should normally have one of the following qualifications:
    • GCE Ordinary, Cambridge 1119, GCSE or IGCSE English Language, grades A-C.
    • British Council IELTS 6.0 or above.
    • TOEFL: 575 (paper based) / 233 (computer-based) / 80 (internet-based) or above.
    • The University also accepts a wide range of other English Language qualifications. Please contact the Graduate Office (see below), where staff will be happy to advise you.

To apply, you will also need the following:

  • Authentic copies of your education transcripts and degree certificates.
  • Two references from persons who can provide a statement about your Academic ability.
  • Proof of your ability to finance your study.

We have four intake months per year - January, April, July and October. The duration of the course is typically three years of full-time study.
