Rifleman Andrew Fentiman

We have learnt with deep regret of the death in Afghanistan of Rifleman Andrew Ian Fentiman who was a former student of the University of Leicester.

Andrew read Mechanical Engineering at the University between 2005-06  and sat the Foundation Year programme based at Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College.

A spokesperson for the University of Leicester said: “We are all saddened to learn of the death of Andrew  who was so recently a part of our student community. Our deepest condolences go to his family and friends.”

Ian Wilson, Principal of Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College where Andrew had studied, added: “Our abiding memory of Andrew is of a young man with clear ambitions.  He was determined to gain a place on the Engineering degree at the University of Leicester – that was why he enrolled for the Foundation Programme here at the College – and equally determined to join the army.  At times those twin ambitions came together.  His tutor remembers vividly, and poignantly now, a presentation he made to his fellow Physics students on the materials used in protective clothing for the armed forces.  Reading the tributes to him from his army colleagues it is evident that he was as well-liked and respected there as he was when a student here.  It is very sad to think that we shall now be adding another name to the war memorial that stands in the College grounds. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Fellow Engineering student at the University of Leicester, Kieran Dawson, said: “I went out socialising with him on a number of occasions. He was a great guy -always wanting to go out, have a good time and make the most of the university experience.

“I do remember him telling me that he came to university to study engineering and to then join the army and climb through the ranks, with the degree education behind him. I am very sad to hear of his death.”

Tribute from the Ministry of Defence.
