PhD Studentship investigating pipeline welding available

by nja posted on Aug 19, 2010 10:15 AM last modified Aug 19, 2010 10:18 AM

Dr Hong Dong has an EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship in collaboration with Corus available from October 2010.

Title: Welding of Linepipes for Deep-sea Oil and Gas Transportation System

Applications are invited for a PhD CASE studentship funded jointly by the EPSRC and Corus.

Project

The demand for deep-sea oil and gas supply is increasing due to the higher demand on energy and security of energy supply. The pipelines for transporting oil and gas are constructed by joining high strength steel linepipes via welding. How to achieve defect-free welding joints with favourable microstructure and properties in linepipe production is of vital importance to the pipelines especially to be laid at deep and ultra-deep waters. The current project is designed to address these issues in terms of microstructure evolution and defect formation and avoidance during linepipe welding.

The PhD student will be based in the Engineering Department and will benefit from opportunities to work closely with a research consortium on a major European seventh framework programme (FP7), MintWeld, on modeling, characterization and testing of welds.

Financial Support

UK students (including non-UK EU nationals who have been continuously resident in the UK for the last three years) will receive tuition fees and a stipend for the 3.5-year duration of the project. Other EU students are only eligible for fees. Non-EU students are not eligible for funding. The position is available from October 2010.
