Rose is a Senior Lecturer in Education and a National Teaching Fellow. She began her teaching career as a secondary school mathematics teacher, and  also taught in pre-school, primary, special and adult education. Her work in the School of Education includes teaching on the PGCE Primary course, and co-ordinating continuing professional development programmes for experienced teachers as Director of Continuing Professional Development 

Rose’s major teaching and research interests are in mathematics education, including early years mathematics and low attainment across the 5 to 19 age range. Her strong record of publications for the mathematics classroom and for children at home has extended over twenty years, with more than 100 titles published.

Rose has made a unique contribution to the field of childhood bereavement. Working with the Childhood Bereavement Network and Leeds Animation Workshop, she initiated a much-praised project called ‘Not too young to grieve’ which provides advice about supporting young children who have been bereaved. Rose created The Letterbox Club, for children aged 7 to 13 in foster care in 2003. This has grown year by year, with major funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families in 2007 and 2008.
