My main research and teaching expertise covers three fields of Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching: phonology and pronunciation teaching, international business communication and online language learning and I have conducted funded research projects in all three areas.
I was awarded a University Teaching Fellowship in 2011 for sustained long-term innovation and leadership in the use of e-learning to initiate pedagogical innovations not only in distance learning and assessment but also in tutor roles and support.  The award also recognised the broader impact of my work in this field in terms of dissemination and policy-implementation at institutional and national levels.

I act as an expert for the EU Research Executive Agency, evaluating Marie Curie Research Fellowships.  I was  on the Editorial Board of the Linguistics journal  until 2010 and I recently co-edited (with Leena Louhiala-Salminen) a special issue of the Journal of Business Communication, entitled 'Language Matters'.

I joined the University of Leicester in 2001 and was Programme Leader for the Distance Learning MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL programme for 8 years. I  am currently Online Co-ordinator for the distance MA and also work on our campus-based MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL programme and supervise PhD and EdD students in fields related to my research interests. Before joining the University of Leicester, I worked in several other universities including four years in the School of English at City University, Hong Kong. My background is in business language and communication training and I taught for over twenty years in various countries in Europe and in West Africa.
