Developing Leadership in Education

If you are interested in developing leadership skills and professional networks, come and join like-minded professionals at the University of Leicester, to share your ideas on our enjoyable and supportive course for teaching and learning practitioners at all levels who seek to deepen understanding of leadership knowledge to inform practice in educational contexts. We recommend that you have two years of teaching experience but, if this course is of particular relevance to you before this time, please contact the course co-ordinator before applying.
What are the aims of the course
It is an opportunity to critically analyse practices and values relate to educational leadership, learning and change in different contexts through professional dialogs, theory learning, reflective practice and research inquiry. Amongst other topics, we will look at the conceptualisations of both leadership and management as well as divergence between both concepts; leadership and school performance; leading and managing change; school culture;school as a learning community; leadership for learning: communities and teacher leadership; leading in partnerships and networks; and leadership development. The content of both modules consists of both theoretical and inquiry elements.

The course is aimed at Teachers and Leading Practitioners who are interested in developing leadership skills
When does the next course start?
The course starts November 2013. This course runs on alternate years. We recommend that, if you are interested in this course, you might also consider 'Mentoring and Coaching' which will run in November 2014.

What does the course involve?
The course is delivered through a flexible and supportive approach and its delivery includes:
- Seven taught days across the year
- Self-directed study
- Use of interactive collaborative and independent activities/resources through the Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard)
How is the course assessed?
The course will consist of two modules and the assessment for this module is in four parts, with submission dates spread across the year:
- A literature review around your chosen research focus
- A presentation of you ongoing inquiry project
- A reflective report of your learning journey across the course
- A research report of your inquiry project
What is the outcome of the course?
Successful completion of the course gives 60 credits at Masters Level. (Level 7 in the National Qualification Framework). This Postgraduate Certificate course is part of the University of Leicester's part-time MA in Education: Learning and Teaching
