A Postgraduate Course for Secondary English Teachers and Primary Specialists.

What's really important in English teaching today?  If you are interested in exploring current issues in English Education,  come and join like-minded professionals at the University of Leicester, to share your ideas on our enjoyable and supportive course for teachers.

What are the aims of the course?

The aims of the course are to explore your own teaching and to examine some of the dilemmas and challenges facing teachers of English in different settings and across the whole age range.  Amongst other topics, we will look at speaking and listening, dialogic teaching, performance, phonics and teachers as readers and writers.

Who can join the course?

The course is aimed at teachers of pupils aged 3 to 19.

When does the next course start?

The course starts November 2014. This English/Literacy and Language focused course is offered in alternate years. Currently, and in autumn 2013, its 'sister' course Promoting Language Development will be available.

There is also a requirement for additional study, equivalent to three days for developmental work in your own school or with colleagues from the course, plus
personal time for reading etc.

What does the course involve?

The course is delivered through a flexible and supportive approach and its delivery includes:

  • Seven taught days across the year.
  • Self-directed study.
  • A Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard).

How is the course assessed?

The course will consist of two modules and the assessment for this module is in four parts, with submission dates spread across the year:

  1. Reflective Writing: Identifying the relevant issues in your own practice.
  2. Critical Evaluation: An academic article and an activity involving the use of new technology in English Teaching.
  3. Presentation.
  4. Project Report: Case study or mini action research project.

What is the outcome of the course?

Successful completion of the curse give 60 credits at Masters level. (Level 7 in the National Qualifications Framework).  The Postgraduate Certificate is part of the University of Leicester's part time MA in Education: Learning and Teaching.
