Mathematical Content

Economics is mathematical in nature.  So, whether or not you have done A-level mathematics, the Department of Economics will teach you all of the mathematics you will need to study our BA or BSc economics courses successfully.  Nevertheless, it is worthwhile knowing a little bit about the level and type of mathematics that is central to much of modern econmics.

Broadly speaking there are two strands of mathematics that you'll be learning about during your time at Leicester: calculus and optimization and probablity and statistics.

Calculus and Optimization

The critical topics here are differentiation, integration, maximization of functions of one and of many variables, and constrained optimization.

You may have come across some of these methods before, particularly if you have studied A-level mathematics, but don't worry if you haven't because we will teach them to you in your first year as part of your degree programme.

Proabability and Statistics

The critical topics here are basic probability theory and distributions, inference, estimation, and hypothesis testing.  Again, whether you have or haven't come across these topics before you will be taught them in your first year as poart of your degree programme.
