Erasmus and Study Abroad Programmes

As an undergraduate economics student you will have the exciting opportunity to extend your studies and acquire new language skills by spending a year abroad in either; Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Canada or the United States of America.

You will complete the first two years of studies at the University of Leicester then you will be able to spend your third abroad studying at a university with which the Department of Economics has a student exchange agreement. You will then return to Leicester to complete the final year of your degree.

Although the year you spend abroad  year will not count towards your final degree classification it will (upon successful completion of your year abroad) change the title of your degree to ‘BA/BSc with a Year in Europe’ or ‘BA/BSc with a Year Abroad’, depending on the selected programme..

Any modules you undertake will need to be formally approved by the Department of Economics  Modules can be selected from areas of study that are broadly related to your current degree course, for example:  Economics; Business Studies; Finance; Management; Computing; Statistics; Economic History; Law; European Studies; Politics; and Languages.

Eligibility

All Department of Economics undergraduate students can apply.  Those taking joint degrees however, should contact their lead department.
Applications are taken during the 1st year of study. However, please note; there will be a  limit on the number of students that can apply for each receiving institution.

To be considered you will need

• 70% overall in year 1

• No module below 60% in semester 1 of year 2

• Students are required to pass year 2 before they leave, i.e. you cannot take retakes in September

To gain the degree ‘With a Year in Europe’ (ERASMUS programme)

To successfully complete the year abroad and be awarded the degree of BA/BSC with a Year in Europe, students are normally required to obtain a minimum of 40 ECTS. Given the workload and study hours associated with 40 ECTS credits, we view this requirement as being more or less the workload equivalent to 120 Leicester credits.

Students that do not pass the year abroad under these conditions will be automatically transferred back to the normal BA/BSc degree, without the ‘Year in Europe’. 

To gain the degree ‘With a Year Abroad’ (Study Abroad programme)

To successfully complete the year abroad and be awarded the degree of BA/BSC with a Year Abroad, students will normally be expected to select and pass modules that correspond to a workload equivalent of 120 Leicester credits. Although there are variations across countries and institutions, this requirement normally corresponds to eight (8) academic modules during the year abroad.

Students that do not pass the year abroad under these conditions will be automatically transferred back to the normal BA/BSc degree, without the ‘Year Abroad’.
