Research students can also enroll in the Joint Doctorate with the University of Milan. Students enrolled in this degree (which has the same entry requirements as the PhD in Leicester, including English), are assigned two supervisors (one in Milan and one in Leicester), and must spend at least one year in each institution, where they receive the same benefits as Research students registered at that institution.

The thesis for the award of a joint PhD has the same qualitative requirements as a PhD thesis in Leicester and in Milan, and, if successful, a candidate will be awarded the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics at the Universities of Leicester (UK) and Milano (Italy).
