Professor Hall speaks at 'the Crises in the Euro Area' conference
Professor Stephen Hall, Head of the Department of Economics, will be speaking at a conference on 'the crises in the Euro area' organised by the Bank of Greece and the System of European Central Banks on 24th May in Athens.
The conference looks at all aspects of the financial crisis from its origins in the subprime market in the US to the issue of debt forgiveness and the appropriateness of the austerity packages being pursued by many governments. Professor Hall's paper considers the possibility that the debt crisis affecting Greece, Spain, Portugal , Italy and Ireland is partly caused by an inappropriate reaction by the markets to these countries fundamental problems.

Economics Year in Industry Programme
The Department of Economics are excited to now be able to offer you the chance to participate in a ‘Year in Industry’ degree programme. A ‘Year in Industry’ involves you undertaking a year of full-time work in a suitable internship between year 2 and year 3. On successful completion of your studies and the programme you will receive your degree ‘with a Year in Industry’. E.g. BA Economics with a Year in Industry.
Economics Students Offered Special Opportunity to study Claritas Investment Certificate
The Department of Economics are delighted to announce that students who undertake our BA and BSc degree in Financial Economics and Banking and Finance (providing they choose Investment Management as an option) will be offered the special opportunity to study the syllabus for the Claritas Investment certificate which has just been launched by the Chartered Financial Analysis Institute.
We are one of a very small, prestigious and elite group of universities that is able to offer this service to students. Extra lectures will be provided to cover the syllabus and you will learn about the tools and analysis that are used to make investment decisions as well as the different asset classes available to investors and much more.
Studying the syllabus with the Department will mean that you will be fully prepared to undertake the examination to achieve the Claritas Investment certificate. Superstar Awards for Economics Teaching Staff
Dr Gaia Garino and Professor Sanjit Dhami have recently received the Students Union Superstar awards for their teaching.
The Superstar Awards is a scheme which provides the opportunity for students to nominate any member of staff throughout the year that they feel have been a real ‘superstar’. Both Gaia and Sanjit received a certificate each which has a citation on it stating the reasons for their awards. They also both received a mug confirming their 'Super Star' status.
Gaia was nominated by third year Economics student Gopi Patel who said that she was a "fantastic teacher and one of the nicest people she had ever met". She also added that Gaia "does not read her slides, but instead engages her students into the teaching which encourages them to attend the lectures".
Gaia had quite a surprise when she received her certificate and mug as she was conducting a lecture in Macroeconomics at the time to her first year students when the Academic Affairs Officer Dan Flatt and Gopi popped by to present it to her. Gaia was profoundly touched and very grateful for the award.
Sanjit was nominated by Bilal Mussa who is an MSc Economics student who said that Sanjit’s “ability to teach a very cryptic and difficult book has enabled the class undertaking macroeconomic theory to understand the various models presented in a simple approachable manner". He also added that “if Sanjit was unable to make an office meeting he will reschedule his hours to suit the students. This enables the students to have contact time with him to go through any issues”. He received his certificate from Academic Affairs Officer Dan Flatt and Bilal Mussa.
Sanjit said that these awards are an "important recognition from the student community" and he said that he was "delighted to have received his award ".
Research Development Fund 2012/2013
The College of Social Science has set aside a total of £100,000 in its budget to the Research Development Fund (RDF) for the academic year 2012/2013.
College of Social Science funding for research student reading groups, discussion groups etc
We are pleased to announce that the College is now able to provide funding for tea, coffee and biscuits to support initiatives such as reading/ discussion groups or groups where students present their work to each other, where these are organized on the students' initiative. This is in order that we support activities which are ongoing in some departments and Schools (Economics, Education and Management), and encourage other initiatives of this kind.

Economics Student talks about his time on placement with HM Treasury
Economics undergraduate Keith Chivindika returned to his home department recently to provide students with some insights from his year in industry. Keith is currently on a one-year placement at HM Treasury where he has been applying many of the economic theories he learned during his first two years of study at the University of Leicester. Whilst on placement Keith has played an important role in the preparation of the Autumn Statement and has responsibility for keeping colleagues up to date on the latest research relating to tax and welfare policies.
Keith’s talk centred around describing his role and giving students a first hand account of the world of work in HM Treasury. Students asked probing questions about the recruitment process, the representation of women in the organisation, work experience and how best to prepare for such a role. Keith recommended a number of Think Tanks as a good starting point, such as the Adam Smith Institute and the Institute of Economic Affairs.
The Department of Economics would like to thank Keith for taking time out of his working day to provide information and advice to students. Creating impact from Leicester’s research: 28 February 2013 event
Academics, including Dr Leah Bassel from the Department of Sociology, will share their experience of creating impact from Leicester’s research at an event on 28 February, organised as part of Research Focus Week.

‘Social Science & Sustainable Development’ run by Dr Nelya Koteyko from the Department of Media & Communications and Dr Roland Leigh from the Department of Physics & Astronomy which will discuss the launch of a university-wide Sustainability Network.

Postgraduate Open Evening - Tuesday 19th March 2013
The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that it will be taking part in a Postgraduate Open Evening on Tuesday 19th March, between 4-7pm.
Staff members from the Department will be on hand throughout the event to give advice on the postgraduate options that the Department offers, as well as guidance on the funding opportunities available and the application process.
Also in attendance will be Dr Dan Ladley, who will be giving a short talk (5.30 pm) about the Department's status as a program partner of the CFA institute, and a current MSc student who will be talking about their experiences of being a postgraduate student within the Department of Economics (6 pm).

Master Degrees in Economics and Finance Part-Fee Bursaries for UK/EU applicants
The Department of Economics is pleased to offer five part-fee bursaries for September 2013 entry to one of its full-time campus based Masters degree programmes.

The Department of Economics is pleased to offer six Graduate Teaching Assistantships for October 2013 entry to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. 12 Bloomberg terminals have arrived
The Department of Economics is delighted to announce the arrival of 12 Bloomberg terminals. These terminals are housed in the University Library IT2.
These terminals provide economics students the opportunity to see how traders work and will help develop the skills that leading employers ask for using the industry standard platform. It will also enable students to access financial news and information, including real-time stock quotes 24/7.
University of Leicester Economic students attend the annual CFA Careers Open Day
Forty University of Leicester MSc Financial Economic students recenty travelled to Westminster in London to take advantage of the annual CFA Careers Open Day which is one of the many CFA events that they are invited to attend throught their year of studies.
The day commenced with a light lunch, giving students and employers a chance to relax and chat in an informal setting. Following lunch there were a series of presentations and panel discussions which ranged from insights into the latest macroeconomic research to trends in graduate recruitment in the finance sector. There was also an opportunity for students to have their CVs looked at and to network with key employers such as BlackRock, HSBC, JP Morgan, Towers Watson and others.
The Department of Economics students were well presented and well prepared and to the delight of employers, posed challenging and pertinent questions throughout the day.
The event was very successful for all concerned and the department intends to build on this and expand for the future.
Dr Martin Foureaux Koppensteiner awarded research grant
Martin Foureaux Koppensteiner and Marco Manacorda (Queen Mary University of London) have been awarded an Inter-American Development Bank research grant of US$30,000 for a project on the cost of crime in Latin America entitled "Life and Death in the Favelas".
The project uses birth and death microdata from Brazil to measure the effect of in utero exposure to violent crime on birth outcomes. Details on the programme can be found here:
