Research in CSMM
Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine is a internationally reknowned research-led department, bringing together basic and clinical scientists and having excellent links with the National Health Service. Our strategic aim is to capitalise on our strong basic scientific research programmes to expand our translational and clinical research to achieve patient benefit.
The Department comprises of four sections which are linked by their different aspects of Cancer Research (aetiology, biology, prevention and treatment) or by their focus on stem cell and cell biology, as they relate to the Reproductive Sciences.
Research is carried out through the following Sections:
- Cancer Biomarkers and Prevention: (Section Head: Professor P Farmer)
The overall aim of the Section is to develop and apply strategies for both prevention and improved treatment of cancer. There is an emphasis on the use of biomarkers in mechanistic studies of carcinogenesis and for monitoring the effectiveness of chemoprevention and therapy. Current studies include mechanisms of bladder and lung cancer cell treatment sensitivity and development of biomarkers for normal tissue toxicity in response to chemotherapy.
- Cell Signalling and Molecular Pathology: (Section Head: Professor M Manson)
The major emphasis of research within this Section is on the molecular changes and altered cell signalling pathways that drive tumorigenesis and the ways in which these can be targeted to prevent or treat cancers. Also important is the translation of basic scientific research through to the clinic for patient benefit.
- Reproductive Sciences: (Section Head: Professor J Konje)
Reproductive Sciences encompasses clinical and translational research into the areas of endocannabinoids in reproductive tissues, urogynaecology, hypertensive disorders, preterm birth, intrauterine infection, feto-placenta growth, reproductive toxicology, adenomyosis and endometriosis.
- Translational Clinical Research: (Section Head: Professor B Morgan)
This section includes several clinical academic groups conducting lab based research, and both translational and later phase clinical trials. Many members have links with the other sections and share the common goal of linking strong preclinical and clinical research in the University and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
