Registration for Computer Access

There are three types of computer accounts at this University

Student account - this is created automatically for all students when their course registration is complete. Accounts will be closed on the date registration ends. Extensions will normally only be available where the student is registered with the University as "writing up". In exceptional circumstances a student may be transferred to an associate account but in general all students should expect their access to University IT to terminate promptly.

Staff account - available to all staff, a request from the department is necessary before the account is created. These accounts can be created in advance so that they are available on the day the individual starts in post. If you wish to have a staff account created please send details including full name and details of the appointment with start (and finish if known) date to Jon Naylor (nay@leicester.ac.uk) . Accounts are normally created on the day requested but at busy times (e.g. beginning of autumn term) it may take up to five working days.

Staff accounts require formal renewal every five years.

Associate account - available for holders of honorary contracts, employees with emeritus status, workers on casual contracts and individuals collaborating with academic staff within the department. In this context collaboration means work on a shared project with real publication prospects. If there is any doubt about eligibility the final decision will be taken by the Head of Department.

If you require an associate account to be set up please forward details to Jon Naylor  (nay@leicester.ac.uk) which must include full name of proposed account holder, their home address, telephone number, date of birth, reason for requesting account and the length of time account is required.

Associate accounts require annual renewal with departmental approval.

Visitors - if you wish a short term visitor to have internet access you should recommend they bring their personal laptop and use Wi-Fi access rather than requesting an associate account for them.
