Printing from a University IT account
Printing documents produced on or downloaded to a computer is an everyday event within this department. This facility is frequently taken for granted but it is not cheap, in the last year the department printed over a quarter of a million sheets of A4. Depending on the type of printer used per page costs varied from a couple of pence to over 45p for some of the inkjet models in use.
Please do all you can to reduce this cost for us, be especially careful about printing material in colour, this is much more expensive than monochrome.
Installing Printers
There are three ways you may gain access to a printer
- it is connected directly to your computer
- it is connected to another departmental computer and shared from there to allow multiple users
- it is connected directly to the network and you print by submitting your printing to a ITS maintained network print queue.
Direct Connection
If you need a printer installed locally on a UOL client please contact Jon Naylor (nay@leicester.ac.uk , 07554115181) to arrange this.
Local Shared connection
Before you begin you must know the name of the computer sharing the printer you want to use. This name is visible directly under the My Computer entry on the start menu of that computer.
Login to your ITS account.
From the start menu open "Printers and Faxes"
Click on the "Add a printer" item at the top left of the window.
Click next on the first three pages of dialogue.
This will open the "Find Printer"dialogue box.
Click on "Find Now"
In a few moments the system will provide you with a list of all the shared printers available on the UOL system.
Increase the width of this window until you can see at least the first four columns of information. The fourth column is labelled "Server Name". Click once on that label. This will sort the whole table alphabetically based on server name. Scroll down to entries where the "server name" is of the form CM-xxxxx. These are machines within this department with shared printers. Choose the one you want to install, click on it to highlight that row and click the "OK" button.
After a short delay the printer will be installed and you will be asked if you want to set it as your default printer. Answer that appropriately and click finish.
It is necessary for both the host computer and the printer to be powered for this installation to work.
ITS Print queue
Follow the instructions given above but click on "name", column 1, rather than "server name", column 4, to sort the list. All Cancer Studies print queues have a name starting CM_ most then indicate the building, room and printer type.
Choose the one you require and click "OK" to install as above.
