Re-launch of the Scarman Lecture Series

The Department of Criminology have announced the re-launch of the
'Scarman Lecture Series' starting in January 2012. This series of lectures will cover riots, drugs and air pollution.

The sequence kicks off on 11 January at 5pm when Professor Reece Walters from Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, will speak on 'Invisible Violence: Air Pollution and the Politics of Regulation in the UK'. This lecture explores the negative effects of air pollutants within Zizek’s framework of 'violence' and identifies how Criminology must continue to push new boundaries and engage with new horizons with emerging harmful acts of both local and global concern.

On 8 February at 4.30pm, Professor Tony Jefferson from Keele University will deliver a lecture on 'The Riots 2011: Another Moral Panic or... What?' Professor Jefferson will attempt to describe what happened, when and where it happened, and who was involved in the recent riots, based largely on the fairly exhaustive coverage by the Guardian newspaper and its reporters and commentators.

Looking further ahead, 13 June will see Professor Julian Buchanan considering 'The damage caused by drugs, or the damage caused by drug policy?'

Yvonne Jewkes, Professor of Criminology, said: "The Department of Criminology is delighted to welcome three distinguished, internationally renowned scholars to the University of Leicester. The Scarman Lecture Series has always invited guest speakers who are working in areas that are topical, provocative and of interest to scholars, policy-makers and the wider public, and Professors Reece Walters (QUT, Brisbane, Australia) , Tony Jefferson (Keele University) and Julian Buchanan (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand) will continue this tradition. Experts in pollution and 'green' criminology, riots and drugs respectively, these acclaimed speakers will re-launch this public lecture series in 2012.  Anyone is welcome to attend and enjoy a glass of wine with Reece, Tony and Julian after their lectures."

Location of Lectures

All the lectures take place in the Frank and Katherine May Lecture Theatre in the Henry Wellcome Building on Wednesdays. All lectures are free and open to the public, and followed by a wine reception.
