The work of Neil Chakraborti and Jon Garland, both Senior Lecturers at the Department of Criminology, features in a new special issue of the International Review of Victimology, the leading international peer-reviewed journal for victimological research.

The special issue – entitled ‘Hate Crime Victimisation’ and guest edited by Dr Chakraborti - seeks to promote a more nuanced understanding of what hate crime victimisation entails and of how scholars, practitioners and ordinary citizens can respond more effectively to the needs of hate crime victims. It contains contributions from leading scholars based in north America, Australia and here in the UK, and highlights the emerging body of international scholarship that is shaping the thematic scope of hate crime studies and victimology more broadly. The special issue includes an article from Jon Garland that uses notions of community, risk, harm and vulnerability to conceptualise experiences of targeted victimisation, as well as papers looking at the effectiveness of community mediation interventions, the victimisation of overseas students, the wider community impact of hate crime, and distinctions between the policing of hate in New York and London.
