Leicester Criminologist Appointed as Trustee to World’s Oldest Penal Reform Charity
Dr Neil Chakraborti, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Criminology, has been invited to join the Board of Trustees at the Howard League for Penal Reform.
Established in 1866, the Howard League for Penal Reform is the oldest penal reform charity in the world and is renowned for its pioneering work designed to facilitate less crime, safer communities and fewer people in prison. As an organisation, it achieves principled and radical change through a variety of ways, including research, inquiry and monitoring; the exchange of ideas and provision of education; legal intervention on behalf of young people; demonstration projects inside prisons; links with international bodies, voluntary and statutory agencies; and parliamentary and government relations.
In his capacity as a trustee, Dr Chakraborti will be involved in the setting and monitoring of the strategic direction of the Howard League and the establishment of policy. He will also have a key role in providing strategic oversight of their research activity, helping to ensure that their research activities dove-tail into the Howard League’s broad organisational goals.
Anita Dockley, Director of Research at the Howard League for Penal Reform, commented:
“The Howard League for Penal Reform is looking forward to welcoming Neil Chakraborti onto its board of trustees. Neil’s appointment will add to the expertise and academic range of the board as well as strengthening and enhancing the work of the Howard League but especially the development of its research capabilities.”
