The Criminology Society
Study Criminology and want to get to know your fellow students?
Interested in crime and criminal issues in today’s society?
What better way than to join the fastest growing society in the University!
Having had an extremely successful year in 2009/2010, the Criminology Society is now at the largest it has ever been with over 130 members. Our membership includes undergraduate students across all three years, international students and postgraduates. The new committee has now settled in and we are in the process of organising several events that will be held throughout the upcoming year.
The Society has again been able to book a stall at the Freshers’ Fair in which people will be able to come and ask the society any questions they may have along with joining the society for the new academic year. Membership this year will be £4 per person. This money will be used to help subsidise the cost of events. In addition, all members will receive a discount on Society items such as our hooded sweatshirts. We very much consider the £4 membership fee a small price to pay in comparison to the various discounts that everyone will benefit from.
There continues to be considerable interest in our hooded sweatshirts. These are embroidered on the front with the Criminology Society logo thumb print and embroidered on the back with your name or nickname. The sweatshirts are available in 30 different colours for a very reasonable price. Due to their popularity, we will soon be offering polo shirts with the Criminology Society logo on them. Details about the hooded sweatshirts will be provided once everyone has joined the society during Freshers’ fortnight.
Last year we were successful in organising three prison trips for 22 of our members. We are hoping that this year we will be able to establish a more permanent relationship with the prisons and be able to organise further trips for more of our members.
Last year the society went from strength to strength resulting in us being able to provide the Criminology Society football team with brand new football kits, something we are aiming to do again this year.
With additional funding from the Students’ Union and an ever increasing relationship building with the Howard League, this year is proving to be a great success for the Criminology Society. Upcoming events will include a range of different themed nights out, informal get-togethers, a Winter Ball, a Summer Ball and various other activities.
