What our students say...

"Medical Physiology at the University of Leicester has been both an interesting and challenging degree, which provides its students with an in depth insight into the world of scientific research. Students on this course have the opportunity to observe a wide range of experimental techniques as a result of the department's fantastic facilities. Furthermore, the academic staff in the department are extremely accessible and approachable; they constantly exceeded my expectations, and never failed to impress me with their enthusiasm for the course, which is clear in their teaching. The classes are relatively small, which helps when attempting to work closely with the rest of the group, and to make friends. The University of Leicester's campus is quite small and compact, which makes a busy timetable easier to handle. Altogether, my time at this university has been absolutely fantastic, and my degree in Medical physiology has been a vital step in my career."

Cardiovascular Physiology

The cardiovascular theme encompasses all research in the College that is related to the cardiovascular system. The research spans the spectrum from genetic and molecular science through to clinical trials and population research. Principle sub-themes include cardiovascular genetics, thrombosis, cell signalling and ion channels, cardiovascular physiology, myocardial and structural biology, inflammation and atherosclerosis, clinical trials and multi-disciplinary research programmes on several common cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, diabetes and valvular heart disease. There is excellent interaction between basic and clinical scientists and a strong emphasis on translation facilitated by the recent establishment of a NIHR Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease. Principal investigators are based in several College Departments including Cardiovascular Sciences, Health Sciences. Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Infection, Inflammation and Immunity. There are strong interactions with investigators in other Departments including Engineering, Physics and Chemistry as well as with national and international groups. Collaborations are facilitated within the theme through regular research days, a regular seminar programme, establishment of groups focused on specific sub-themes, a theme intra-net and cross Departmental studentships.
