Research in Cell Physiology and Pharmacology

We have an international reputation for research excellence in neuroscience, cell signalling and cardiovascular biology which compliments the new College's thematic research strategy.  CPP staff are members of one or more of the following themes:

Some of the human conditions targeted by our research are cardiac arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, memory impairement in the ageing population, diabetes, asthma, chronic pain, deafness and tinnitus, Alzheimer's disease, malaria, blood clotting, stroke, and many more.  Our research is strongly supported by UK Research Councils, Medical Charities, the European Union, and the pharmaceutical industry.

The Department has access to the facilities in The Centre for Core Biotechnology Services (CBS)

In the HEFCE Research Assessment Exercise 2008, Biological Sciences research at Leicester was rated 11th out of 49 universities that were submitted (Research Fortnight Power Ratings):

What our students say...

"Medical Physiology at the University of Leicester has been both an interesting and challenging degree, which provides its students with an in depth insight into the world of scientific research. Students on this course have the opportunity to observe a wide range of experimental techniques as a result of the department's fantastic facilities. Furthermore, the academic staff in the department are extremely accessible and approachable; they constantly exceeded my expectations, and never failed to impress me with their enthusiasm for the course, which is clear in their teaching. The classes are relatively small, which helps when attempting to work closely with the rest of the group, and to make friends. The University of Leicester's campus is quite small and compact, which makes a busy timetable easier to handle. Altogether, my time at this university has been absolutely fantastic, and my degree in Medical physiology has been a vital step in my career."
