What our students say...

"Medical Physiology at the University of Leicester has been both an interesting and challenging degree, which provides its students with an in depth insight into the world of scientific research. Students on this course have the opportunity to observe a wide range of experimental techniques as a result of the department's fantastic facilities. Furthermore, the academic staff in the department are extremely accessible and approachable; they constantly exceeded my expectations, and never failed to impress me with their enthusiasm for the course, which is clear in their teaching. The classes are relatively small, which helps when attempting to work closely with the rest of the group, and to make friends. The University of Leicester's campus is quite small and compact, which makes a busy timetable easier to handle. Altogether, my time at this university has been absolutely fantastic, and my degree in Medical physiology has been a vital step in my career."

About Postgraduate Study

PhDs and MRes in Cell Physiology and Pharmacology

The Department has a considerable range of expertise and research interests and was awarded a 5A rating in the 2001 RAE, and was A rated for postgraduate training by the MRC.  The main groupings in the Department encompass G Protein Coupled Receptors, Cell Signalling, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Science and Ion Channels/Membrane Transport. The approaches extend from 'the molecule to the system' and include studies on the properties and signalling of native and recombinant receptors and ion channels, second messenger assays, yeast two hybrid analysis, transgenic mice, calcium imaging, confocal microscopy, capacitance measurements of neurotransmitter release, and patch clamp recordings from nerve terminals in brain slices.  The scientific environment in the Department provides a continuum of both ideas and approaches (combining traditional and molecular techniques) across a range of topics to give an excellent opportunity for postgraduate study in molecular physiology and pharmacology.
