Students Projects and Placements

Looking for small to medium-sized solutions to standard computing problems? Access our expertise through our best students! We offer a range of formats for cooperation, according to scale and experience required. Especially attractive for small and local businesses.

Students' projects in cooperation with external partners, such as companies or organisations in the public sector, provide a unique opportunity for both transfer of knowledge and development of solutions for real-world problems. In combination with summer placements, they are also a great way for future employers to assess the abilities of individual students.

All projects are closely supervised by staff members in weekly meetings. Companies or other organisations can submit project proposals through students or members of staff who agree to act as supervisors, or by contacting the convenor of the module.

The characteristics and procedures differ between the three kinds of projects (see below). If you are not sure which is the most adequate one for your needs or would like to receive further information, please contact Reiko Heckel.

Second Year Group Projects

These are typical software engineering project developed in the parallel by a number of teams of 5-7 2nd year students. The focus is on group work, project management, as well as on developing an understanding of software development processes and methodologies. This requires a careful analysis of requirements and evaluation of different solutions in cooperation with the company or organisation acting as a customer.

Since all development teams are working on the same project, this needs more preparation and planning than the individual projects (see below). According to the usual timetable the project is defined in April or May. Planning starts in September and the projects are completed in May of the year to follow.

Placements (Industry Degrees)

We have always encouraged our students to take a placement in industry between the 2nd and 3rd year of their degree. At this time, students are fluent in Java, Database and Web technologies and have completed their 2nd year Software Engineering project. We offer, from 2008 entry, a formal Industry degree, which means that students who do sufficiently well during their first two years can obtain a Computer Science (Industry) degree certificate that formally acknowledges their year in industry. If you are looking for suitable candidates, we will be happy to forward your job description to our students, once we have discussed with you the monitoring and persoanl tutor arrangements that we provide for our students.

Individual Third Year BSc Projects

These are the projects completed at the end of the BSc degree. Topics may vary greatly, but all projects consist of a practical software development component as well as provide documentation covering the technical and engineering background, requirements, design, as well as implementation and testing.

According to the usual timetable, project proposals are published at the end of April and projects are completed in May of the year to follow. During summer, a placement of the student in the organisation or company should be used to build up an understanding of the problem and its context and to make some first practical steps towards the solution.

Individual MSc Projects

These projects are a major part of the MSc degree. Topics may vary and projects could vary from being more research-oriented, like evaluating certain technologies, to very practical, like building a specific system.

According to the usual timetable, project proposals are published in January and are completed in September. A placement of the student in the organisation or company should be used to build up an understanding of the problem and its context and to make some first practical steps towards the solution.
