CLMS Seminar Programme 2011-12
Please note - the date for the seminar by Réka Plugor has changed and it will now be held on Tuesday 24th April 2012.
Changes in Labour Relations and Alternative Forms of Organising
Convened by Rutvica Andrijasevic
Standard employment relations are getting increasingly transformed through migration and precarious labour arrangements. This raises questions about what types of labour arrangements are emerging in different spaces, whether women and men are affected differently, what forms of organising are possible in this changing landscape and what methods we need to research them. We will explore these issues in this years' seminar programme by focusing on migration, gender, labour and alternative forms of organising. Speakers will, among others, address topics such as the relation between labour, migration and protests movements; the link between precarious labour and the inadequacy of current trade unions' strategies; the role of gendered and migrant labour in relation to the state's processing of bordering; and what spaces there are for older workers in the context of workplace innovation. The geographical areas covered will reflect CLMS' research and teaching interests in Hong Kong/China, the Middle East, the EU and the UK.
