Online Resources
When you register for your course, you will at the same time register online for your University of Leicester IT account. This will give you access to your University of Leicester email account, the university online library facilities and Blackboard.
University IT Account
This username relates to University-based computing services. You are likely to use this mainly to access your University email account, Blackboard and Athens. It is usually derived from your initials plus a number. If your name is, say, Joseph David Bloggs, your username will be something like JDB55 and your e-mail address would be jdb55@le.ac.uk. You will also be sent a password to go with this which will be made up of some random characters, which can then be changed to something memorable.
University email account
You can access your University email account online from anywhere in the world via the Outlook Web Access Service. You will need your University IT account username and password to access your emails.
If you have any technical problems with your University IT account account and access to University of Leicester online facilities please contact cchelp@le.ac.uk.
Blackboard
Once you have your University IT account account you can access Blackboard at: https://blackboard.le.ac.uk/
Blackboard is the University's virtual learning environment (VLE) which allows you to communicate with other students and lecturing staff from the Centre and to access course information, submit assignments and participate in the Centre's discussion forums. It works just like a website and is very simple to use: you follow the link to the Leicester Blackboard home page and log in with your University IT account username and password. Once you have logged in you will see a list of the courses you can access, where you can post messages, read messages and access a wide range of electronic resources.

Proxy Server and Athens
Many of the databases, electronic journals and data sets subscribed to by the University need a username and password to gain access to them off campus. You will automatically be prompted to enter your University IT account username and password when you attempt to access these resources. Athens is a national password scheme which allows off-campus students access to a wide-range of online resources such as electronic journals, bibliographic databases, and other online services. Your University IT account will give you direct access to Athens resources. The good place to start using Athens is via the University's Distance Learning Service.
