Stroke
Professor Thompson G Robinson, Dr Amit Mistri, Dr Simon Conroy
The group’s research interests cover the fields of stroke medicine (with particular emphasis on the pathophysiology of the immediate post-stroke period), hypertension in the elderly, the effects of ageing on various physiological parameters (e.g. mechanisms of autonomic cardiac dysfunction, cerebral autoregulation and arterial and endothelial function) and cardiovascular syncope with particular reference to older age groups. Work combines basic cardiovascular physiological studies, clinical intervention trials and systematic reviews.
The Co-ordinating Centres for two recent United Kingdom multi-centre trials, the Continue Or Stop post-Stroke Antihypertensives Collaborative Study (COSSACS) and the Controlling Hypertension and Hypotension Immediately Post Stroke (CHHIPS) Trial, were housed within the Group. In addition, the Group co-hosts the Trent Local Research Network of the United Kingdom Stroke Research Network, with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, managing acute, community, prevention and rehabilitation single- and multi-centre studies adopted by the Stroke Network throughout the Trent Region, including Nottingham, Sheffield and allied centres. Furthermore, the Group undertakes a number of collaborative research projects, including cardiovascular autonomic regulation in other co-morbidities, disability, and ageing.
