Members of this section have expertise in combining basic cardiovascular physiological studies with the coordination of large multicentre studies including: screening and early detection and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes; complex interventions in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, including structured educational interventions; new glucose lowering therapies; novel cardiovascular risk markers and metabolic syndrome; stroke medicine (with particular emphasis on the pathophysiology of the immediate post-stroke period); hypertension in the elderly; the effects of ageing on various physiological parameters (e.g. mechanisms of autonomic cardiac dysfunction, cerebral autoregulation and arterial and endothelial function); cardiovascular syncope with particular reference to older age groups; coagulation following injury; cardiovascular measurement in the Emergency Room and predictive modelling of post-injury outcome; cardiovascular imaging;  the role of urotensin II and opioid receptors in vascular diseases and systemic sepsis; methods of high frequency jet ventilation in a model of tracheal stenosis.
