Emergency Care Diagnostics and Illness Identification

The Leicester EMAG has a major interest in the early diagnosis and risk stratification in emergency care.

Diagnostics Development Unit (DDU)

The Leicester DDU has a portfolio of research projects looking at the application of new technologies in emergency care diagnostics in collaboration with a number of Industry partners. In-house device developments are in collaboration with the Departments of Physics, Space Science and Chemistry.

The Leicester DDU has an instrumented bed in the resuscitation room, supported by NIHR Clinical Research Facility funding. This unique facility allows research to be conducted in the resuscitation phase of emergency care.

Technologies currently in use in the DDU are:

  • Real time breath analysis by mass spectrometry.
  • High definition thermal imaging
  • Thoracic bioimpedence
  • Trans-cutaneous oximetry
  • Supra-sternal doppler
  • Hyper-spectral and multi-spectral imaging

Passive Leg Raise Test in Sepsis Diagnosis

Dr Mohammed Elwan (visiting PhD student from the University of Alexandria, Egypt) is spending time with EMAG on a Newton-Musharraf Fellowship, studying the potential utility of a Passive Leg Raise test in the evaluation of the patients with sepsis.

Bayesian logic in Emergency Care Diagnostics
