Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has chosen Leicester as the home for a new £5.5 million national research unit for heart disease at Glenfield Hospital. The unit will build on the strong existing partnership between The University of Leicester and The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) to enhance the conduct and delivery of translational research in cardiovascular diseases. Other key local and regional partners include the Comprehensive Local Research Network (hosted by UHL), Local Research Networks in Stroke and Diabetes, The Leicester Centre for Ethnic Health Research, the MRC Toxicology Unit and the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University.

The core programmes of the BRU will embrace three themes:

  • Genetics and thrombosis in relation to coronary artery disease

  • Hypertension and vascular damage

  • Novel therapeutic interventions
