Overview of Postgraduate Monitoring Procedures

Induction week

Run by University/College in early October and including Departmental induction. 

Training programme during APG year

All Postgraduate Students (PhD and MD) are required to complete elements from the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology Postgraduate Training Programme as agreed with Supervisor and Postgraduate Tutor.

Literature review (at 4-6 months)

A written essay covering the current, literature relevant to the student’s project. Literature Review Form.

Assessment for transfer from APG to PhD/MD status (by end of month 11)

All PhD and MD students should submit a written report (three copies to be submitted by month 9 of registration, or month 20 for P/T PhD students) followed by an interview with the student’s Supervisory Panel and formal recommendation to the University and student. APG Upgrade PhD/MPhil Form  APG Upgrade MD Form.

Assessment in Year 2 PhD candidates (by end of month 23)

An updated first year report or Departmental Seminar, to include results to date and objectives for Year 3. Interview with the student’s Supervisory Panel. Second Year Report Form.

Assessment early in Year 3 PhD candidates (by end of month 30)

A verbal report of progress together with a written thesis plan and written plan of work to complete. 

Submission of thesis (Preferably within three years and definitely before the end of the fourth year. For MD preferably within two years and definitely before end of third year.)
