I joined the University of Leicester in October 2013. I am an Associate Professor at the School of Business. I am director of the Institute for Quantum Social and Cognitive Science (IQSCS), In different periods between July 2014 and April 2017 I was a visiting professor at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). In March 2017 I obtained the Italian scientific qualification for the position of (Full) Professor. I am also the Deputy Director of Internationalisation at the School of Business.

I am managing editor of the Springer-Nature A1 journal Foundations of Science. I am peer-reviewer for the United States-Israel Bi-national Science Foundation (BSF), the Economic & Social Science Research Council (ESRC), the Leverhulme Trust, and the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR). I am also reviewer for several A1 journals and official reviewer for the American Mathematical Sociy (AMS).

I am author or co-author of more than 80 contributions, including numerous articles in A1 high impact and top journals. I have organised conferences and a series of seminars, presented more than 50 communications, and have been invited to give lectures in the UK (Oxford), US, Canada, Europe and China. I am co-author of the bolume 'The Foundations of Quantum Mechanics: Historical Analysis and Open Questions' (World Scientific, 2006). In 2013 I was conferred an 'Outstanding Scholarly Contribution Award' by the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics for my research activities. I also received in 2016 a 'Superstar Award' by the Students' Union for my teaching.

I am guest editor of the special issues Quantum Probability Theory and its Economic Applications of the 'Journal of Mathematical Economics', Quantum Probability and Contextuality in Psychology and Economics of the 'Journal of Mathematical Psychology' and Quantum Structures in Computer Science: Language, Semantics, Retrieval of the journal 'Theoretical Computer Science'. I am also guest editor of the research topic Quantum Structures in Cognitive and Social Science of the journal 'Frontiers in Psychology'.

I am secretary of the International Quantum Structures Association (IQSA). As a member of its executive committee, I partake in the administrative and financial management of IQSA. Within the activities of IQSCS, I organised the Biennial Conference on Quantum Structures, which took place in Leicester 11 - 15 July 2016 and the special issue will be published in the 'International Journal of Theoretical Physics', with guest editors E. Haven and S. Sozzo. I am also organising with A. Brandenburger (Stern School of Business, New York University), E. Haven (University of Leicester), A. Khrennikov (Linnaeus University), C. Ma (Fudan University), and M. Machina (University of California, San Diego), the Fudan-New York-Leicester Symposium on Quantum Probability and Its Applications in Economics, Leicester 3 - 4 July 2017.

In 2013 I co-organised the grant-based series of seminars Parallel Convergences on the mutual relationships between academic and industrial world. I participate as a partner in the Consortium 'QUARTZ' (Quantum information Access and Retrieval Theory), involving seven European universities, which was funded by the EU Marie Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN).

Research Interests

My research interests are highly interdisciplinary and mainly concern the interface of natural and social sciences. I have provided substantial and pioneering contributions in the development of novel mathematical models in cognitive psychology with relevant applications in decision-making under uncertainty, economics and finance.

PhD Supervision

I have experience of supervision of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students, including joint supervisions at the universities of British Columbia UBC, Brussels VUB and Ghent. Research themes for PhD theses include:

  • Quantum models in cognitive and social science
  • Alternative approaches to decision theory
  • Violation of expected utility theory in economics: Allais, Ellsberg and Machina paradoxes
  • Violations of rationality and the foundations of human thought
  • Concept theory: Identifying quantum structures in the mechanisms of concept combinations
  • Towards a quantum-based theory of information retrieval and natural language processing

Research

My research interests are highly interdisciplinary and mainly concern the interface of natural and social sciences. I have provided substantial and pioneering contributions in the development of novel mathematical models in cognitive psychology, human decision-making and behavioural economics and finance.
