Study Opportunities in the School of Biological Sciences.
The School of Biological Sciences has an international reputation for teaching and research which attracts undergraduate and postgraduate students from around the world. In the 2007National Student Survey, the School was ranked first in the UK for Biology and for Genetics. It was also ranked 2nd for Biochemistry.
In recent years it has been renowned for the discovery of DNA Genetic Profiling (DNA Fingerprinting) by Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys which has had a profound effect in many areas, particularly forensic medicine.

If you do not have the required level of qualification for direct entry to an undergraduate course, you may wish to consider a one-year Foundation course. These courses are of a standard equivalent to GCE Advanced level and provide a sound academic base for continuation on to the corresponding degree programmes
We accept a wide range of international qualifications
We require evidence of aptitude in mathematics and science at high-school level (approx. up to age 16), then further qualifications roughly equivalent to British A-levels (usually taken age 16+).
We accept a wide range of qualifications including the International Baccalaureate, KCSE, HKAL, Cypriot Apolytirion, CBSE / IGCSE, Singapore Diplomas and STPM.
Applicants whose first language is not English, and who have not lived in a country where the first language is English for at least three years immediately prior to the commencement of the course, should normally include in their qualifications one of the following:
- English Language at GCE Ordinary Level or Cambridge 1119 or GCSE or IGCSE, at grades A to C
- British Council IELTS 6.5 or above for entry onto the degree programmes.
- TOEFL 234 to 250 ( 575 - 600 on the old scale) for entry onto the degree programmes, including TWE of 4 or above.
English Language Support
There are a range of English language courses offered by the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) at the University of Leicester. Each is designed to help students acquire the English they need for effective academic study and has excellent facilities. All of the staff are qualified and experienced English language teachers with a great deal of expertise in preparing students for academic study in Britain.
When making an offer, we may recommend or require that you attend one of the English Language courses on offer.

The University of Leicester provides information for international students in the advice and support to International Students in the undergraduate and postgraduate prospectuses and through the International Office.
It also has a dedicated welfare service for all students.
The Student’s Union also runs a large number of cultural societies that support students from a variety of cultural and national backgrounds.
