Medical Biochemistry BSc
“This is a really good course with enough variety of choice of modules to keep you interested and motivated. It's tough but the staff are there to help, support and advise you where they can. I highly recommend the year out in industry. Not only a break from study and a chance to earn some cash, it consolidated my thoughts of a career in science, made me more competent for my third year project and I believe it gave me a head start when applying for a PhD.”
C.S., 2002 graduate, who went on to start a PhD at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research in Manchester
“The Medical Biochemistry course has given me knowledge about a wide variety of
biochemistry techniques from the cellular level, e.g. cancer studies, through to more pharmacological conditions such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and depression. Staff at the University are always willing to help – one of the Professors answered some of my queries by e-mail shortly before a finals exam for which I was very grateful! Nightlife is good in Leicester. The city is very welcoming to students – there are a lot of events at very reasonable prices. A wide variety of musical tastes are catered for in the night clubs and bars. There are good value restaurants, including a popular noodles bar. Two regular party nights per week in the Students’ Union are very popular.”
M.B., 2002 graduate, who went on to do an MSc in Forensics at Strathclyde and is now a police forensics officer
“As a mature student I found the academic staff extremely helpful. The different modules were very interesting and complimented each other.”
L.P., 2003 graduate, who went on to do teacher training
“Medical Biochemistry is an interesting but challenging course which has given me a sound knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry and genetics. The knowledge and skills that I have gained will certainly help me in my future career in Medicine. Being an undergraduate at Leicester has been a wonderful experience because it provides a good range of social and extracurricular activities to balance with academic work.”
D.D., 2003 graduate, who went on to the graduate entry programme at the Leicester Warwick Medical Schools
“This course provides multiple opportunities for future career, whether a medical or research basis. It is really varied and the option of choosing different modules ensures you study what really interests you.”
E.R., 2004 graduate, who went on to do a PhD in Nottingham
“The course is interesting, the staff are helpful and friendly. I would recommend this course to everyone.”
D.E., 2004 graduate
“I would recommend the Medical Biochemistry course to anyone who is curious about the molecular basis of human disease. For instance, if you want to find out how cancer cells spread or what causes heart failure then this is the course for you. The course is
modular in nature, covering a wide range of medically relevant topics and built upon the foundations of a core Biochemistry degree. I found this course to be interesting and challenging, and I particularly enjoyed working in the laboratory on my third year project. The student support within the university, and especially the department, is very good. The academic staff within the Biochemistry department are always willing to assist students if they are having difficulty understanding a particular aspect of the course. Many people use this course as a stepping-stone in preparation for a medicine degree, whereas I chose this course simply because it looked interesting, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a straight Biochemistry degree. Having completed the course, I would say that I have learnt a lot over the pass three years and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the inner workings of the human cell and is not adverse to a bit of hard work.”
J.H., 2005 graduate, who stayed on in Leicester to do a PhD
“Medical Biochemistry at the University of Leicester offers a friendly teaching environment covering highly relevant areas of biochemistry with the possibility of specialising in other areas of biology including cancer research and pharmacology. A good choice for any budding scientists.”
A.C., 2005 graduate, also doing a PhD in Leicester
“I decided to come to Leicester really because of the department's excellent reputation that I had heard about from teachers at my college. I absolutely loved the degree. I really enjoyed the lab work and being hands on - putting theory into practise - it's brilliant.”
N.M., 2006 graduate, who went on to study Medicine
