With my time as a DOTTER (DUCKLING and OTTER) coming to an end and becoming just a DUCKLING, I thought this was a good opportunity to reflect on what I have learnt as a DOTTER (or OTTLING if you’d prefer!).

On 28 April, 2010, Gabi Witthaus and Terese Bird attended a CAMEL meeting sponsored by JISC and taking place at Middlesex University, the theme of which was to examine whether the developments of the project can be embedded and sustained. Once the project is over, can teaching teams continue to use the technologies, findings and deliverables?

After several rounds of giving training in Second Life to students who have never experienced it, we came up with a list of essential skills which should be covered (or at least considered for coverage) in such training.

In a presentation for the LLAS (Languages and Linguistics and Area Studies) Annual E-learning Symposium at the University of Southampton, 'MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics Students Explore Second Life', Ming Nie and I reported on a SL-tivity that took place over seven weeks at the end of 2009. The presentation for LLAS Symposium was done in 'mixed-reality', with me in Southampton and Ming in Leicester, and our avatars meeting on the big screen in Second Life.

Last Friday, three members of the DUCKLING team in the MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics presented a paper at a conference on audio feedback. The presentation harmonised with several of the themes that emerged throughout the day.

We provided the 1st SL training session to a group of 5 distance TESOL students. They joined the session from Canada, South Korea and Singapore...

In the OP team, we are really enjoying using podcasts and are finding them a welcome addition to the course. However, it has taken us some time to find the best way of making these available to students, and the best way of adding the content to different courses in a way that was not too time consuming. Now that we have found a way of doing this, I thought it might be useful for me to share some tips that we, as a team, have found useful.
