Pathfinder Workshop in York

Ale, Sylvia and Helen from the Adelie team attended the HEA's Pathfinder workshop in York yesterday (5th June). It was really interesting to catch up with the progress of the other projects and find out the similarities in the challenges that we all face.

Some of the themes which came out of the day for me include:

  • Course design / design for learning
  • "Embedding" - what does it mean and should it be replaced with "enhancement"
  • Using research as a vehicle for facilitating change
  • Working with teams and departments
  • Providing central support with learning technologists/ embedding learning technologist support within faculties
  • Different models of change process for different types of institutions
  • Assessment
  • wikis, blogs, repostiroes, e-portfolios
  • Students and their technology can far outstrip that available to staff who are not even administrators of their own machines.
  • Can we and should we replicate the kind of social networking activity that students do as learning activity?

Challenges include:

  • time constraints - it's a one year project and doesn't necessarily mess well with the academic year (cf. dissemination in July/August/September)
  • unforeseen delays caused by external technical developments and changes, university processes such as recruitment and
    RAE involvement taking priority
  • Continuity and sustainability especially in the light of attempting embedding
  • Research vs. teaching (cf RAE above)
