Ian Whitbread read Archaeology and Geology at the University of Bristol. After graduating he held a research fellowship at the Fitch Laboratory, British School at Athens, Greece. He took his PhD at the University of Southampton, where he also held a post-doctoral research fellowship. He was appointed Principal Research Scientist at the Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He returned to the British School at Athens as Director of the Fitch Laboratory.  He joined the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at Leicester University in 2001. He has pursued a number of administrative roles at Leicester since and one of his main current roles is as Exchanges Co-ordinator.
