As well as historical narratives, it includes detailed treatments of cities, monarchy, literature, philosophy, religion, and science. Those cultural aspects are understood in their social contexts, rather than as free-standing phenomena. Short-listed for the Runciman Prize 2001.

- 1987 - A History of Samos 800–188 BC (Oxford: Clarendon Press). Draws on historical, epigraphical, archaeological, and landscape data as well as Annales history, to give a holistic portrait of an island community.
